Bible Society Australia is a not-for-profit interdenominational organisation. It’s a member if the United Bible Societies, a fellowship of 146 organisations working in more than 200 countries. Its work in Australia began in 1817, only a few years after the first Bible Society formed in London, with Governor Lachlan Macquarie signing the charter for the Bible Society in the state of New South Wales.
Over the years other Bible Societies formed across Australia and continued to grow and extend the mission. In 2011 the various state based Bible Societies joined together to form one national organisation Bible Society Australia. Over the last 200 years of our history the goal of the Bible Society has been the same.
We strive to lighten people's hearts with the Bible's message of unconditional love in Jesus Christ. To do this, we seek to achieve the widest possible meaningful circulation of the Bible in Australia and around the world. We want to help people engage with the Bible, and advocate for its value for the individual and society as a whole. We aim to see all people engaged with the Bible in a language they understand, in a format they can use, and at a price they can afford.
